바이오아크틱(BioArctic)은 2021년 1월 27일 알츠하이머병의 치료 및 진단 방법에 사용하기 위한 N-말단 절단 아밀로이드베타 원형섬유/올리고머(EP2448968) 특허가 유럽 특허청에 등록되었다고 발표하였다. 이 특허는 아밀로이드 베타의 특정절단형태인 pE3-Ab를 표적으로 하는 새로운 항체에 초점을 맞추고 있다.
pE3-Ab는 AD 환자의 뇌에서 전체 Aβ의 15~45%를 차지하는 것으로보고되었다[1]. pE3-Ab는 절단되지 않은 아밀로이드 베타보다 신경독성이 증가한 것으로 보인다[2]. pE3-Ab에 대한 항체는 Aβ1–40/42 및 전구단백질(APP)의 생물학적 기능을 방해하지 않고 이러한 독성종을 제거할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있다[3].
